Buyelaphi Ndimande is one of the 14 women who run the Mphakathi Craft Market in the Mtubatuba region of KZN. Established in 2007, the Mkhanyakude District Municpality built a structure out of which the project could operate. The crafts are sold to Mr Price, iSimangaliso and the surrounding community. They now also work with Cape Town-based "Design Africa". This project has done really well and the members are deeply committed to growing it even further. Seanokeng Lentswana is bringing home the bacon. Literally. The 6 women that run SPM Farming raise and care for pigs. The #NationalMovementOfRuralWomen has been working with the farm since March 2019. Everyone has their own role to play which ensures the seamless running of the operation. SPM sells their pigs to abattoirs, butcheries and chesanyamas, and, despite the national lockdown greatly affecting their access to market, these passionate women have found new ways to sustain their business. "We don't gossip. We play with soil." That's how Ritha Ngema, one of the members of the Gijima Mama Garden, describes their commitment to the business. The project began in 2008 in the emaHoxo village in the Chief Albert Luthuli Municipality. The 5 members have grown the project from 1 hectare to 3 hectares, on which they plant cabbage, spinach and beetroot. Even though they've done well, they would like to further expand their market by supplying their local Shoprite.
